Panamanian jumping spider Eris aurantia (family Salticidae) with prey cricket which has just been jumped upon. The Salticids are a family of hunting spiders, named for their ability to jump from 2- 20x their body length. They have very acute binocular vision, which allows the prey to be detected & also provides good accuracy when making jumps between twigs. Having detected their prey, they stalk it & gradually creep closer. Finally they jump the last few cms, from a standing start and grab hold of the prey with their forelegs.
