Common frog. High-speed photograph of a common frog, Rana temporaria, leaping from a rock. The long powerful hind legs are seen at centre left. The body and legs total 6-10 centimetres in length. This mainly nocturnal frog lives in woodlands close to streams or in other wetlands, hunting and feeding on small invertebrates. It is largely terrestrial, although it requires moist conditions and must return to the water to breed. During winter it hibernates in muddy marshes or deeply embedded in the soil. The common frog is found throughout much of Europe.
