Red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) mating. The snakes mate in the spring, after emerging from hibernation. Later that year, each female produces about 16 young. The red-sided garter snake inhabits moist woods and grasslands in northern North America. It feeds on tadpoles, frogs, leeches, earthworms and rodents, and it can reach a length of over one metre. The bite is not venomous, but can be painful. These snakes are in Manitoba, Canada, famous for the world's largest congregations of snakes. The snakes survive the Canadian winter by hibernating in underground dens. Photographed in May 2003.
