He served as a Conservative MP for Launceston 1885 and the Isle of Wight 18851890 and was Attorney General in Conservative administrations between 1885 and 1900. He was raised to the peerage in 1900 and appointed Master of the Rolls before being elevated to Lord Chief Justice of England later the same year, a post he held until 1913.
