1972 Munich Olympics, Swimming, Women's 100m Butterfly Final
Mayumi Aoki (Yamada SC) of Japan won the gold medal in the women's 100-meter butterfly final at the Munich Olympics on September 1, 1972, setting a new world record (1 minute, 3.34 seconds) by defeating a strong American swimmer in the final one meter. This was a great achievement for the women's swimming team in Berlin. This was the first gold medal for the women's swimming team in 36 years, since Maehata in Berlin. Noriko Asano (Juku Juku Juku Shachi-shachi) finished in eighth place. In the following 200-meter butterfly final, Aoki was eighth, but the young Noriko Asano was in fine form, finishing fifth.
