Teleosaurus and Hylaeosaurus reptiles, 19th century
Teleosaurus (centre and right) and Hylaeosaurus (upper right) reptiles, 19th-century illustration. This inaccurate reconstruction shows these prehistoric reptiles co-existing when they actually date from two different time periods. Teleosaurus was a prehistoric crocodile-like (crocodyliform) reptile that lived during the Middle Jurassic (around 176 to 161 million years ago) and grew to around 3 metres in length. Hylaeosaurus was a heavily-armoured herbivorous ankylosaur that lived around 136 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous. It grew to around 5 metres in length. This artwork was published in an 1864 edition of 'The World Before the Deluge' by Louis Figuier.
