Stages of oxygen depletion in the oceans, illustration. This process of oxygen depletion occurs in eutropic zones where fertiliser run-off (far left) and other particulate organic carbon (POC) deposits cause algal blooms (green haze). The algal blooms deplete the water of oxygen and cause hypoxic zones (marine coastal dead zones), resulting in severe and mass loss of fish and other sea life (far right).
