Map of the Americas, circa 1600
Map of the Americas, circa 1600. Features of this map include the inscription at lower left, which recounts the history of explorers Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus, with Ferdinand Magellan's ships (Concepion and Victoria) nearby in the Pacific Ocean. New Guinea is shown at far left, and California is correctly shown as a peninsula, rather than an island. This map was created by Flemish-born cartographer Arnoldo di Arnoldi (died 1602) who lived and worked in Italy. The printer was Matteo Florimi.
