Poplar hawkmoth
Top down view of a poplar hawkmoth (Laothoe populi) resting on a branch in a garden habitat. The flight period is May to July with a single brood each year. This species is a member of the sphingidae family and is found throughout the UK, Europe and the palearctic ecozone. The larval food plants are poplar, aspen and sallow, amongst other trees. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in September.
