Teeth transplantation, 18th century
Teeth transplantation, 18th-century illustration. Dentists extracting teeth from poor people and inserting them into the jaws of richer patients. At centre, a boy is about to have a tooth pulled. A woman next to him has just had an extraction and is about to receive a transplantation. At right a woman is being examined by a dentist. Behind the group a male patient inspects his mouth with a mirror. At left, a boy and girl in rags leave the room in pain, with the girl holding a coin, payment for the tooth she has 'donated'. This 1787 artwork (a hand-coloured etching and aquatint) is by the English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827).
