The Ivernia was a Cunard liner employed during World War One, on transport service. She was sunk in the Mediterranean on New Year's Day, 1917, by a German submarine. This photograph, taken from the deck of the sinking transport, shows men struggling in the water and one of the lifeboats about to founder.
