After months of persistent drought in China, recent heavy rains have caused the Yangtze River to overflow its banks. As drought intensifies the soil becomes harder, making flash flooding due to run-off a major problem. The image on the left shows the most recent vegetative health index which serves as a proxy for drought conditions along the Yangtze: areas colored in yellow and brown are experiencing more stressful/drought conditions. The image on the right shows the accumulated rainfall for the same region from June 3 - 15, 2011. The blue areas received in excess of 1 meter of rainfall.
