Prior to the summit meeting, North Korea presented information on the safety of the 13 abducted Japanese nationals, confirming the deaths of eight, including Megumi Yokota, and the survival of four, including Yasushi Jimura. Kim Jong Il acknowledged the state's involvement and apologized. The two leaders agreed to resume normalization negotiations in October.
