2,000 people attend the first "Tokyo Echicon" at JR Tokyo Station 1987
The first concert at JR Tokyo Station, nicknamed "Tokyo Ekicon," was held on the evening of March 21, and music filled the red brick dome. The free concert was planned by JR East to transform Tokyo Station from a mere transportation stop into a place of community. The one-and-a-half-hour performance by a chamber ensemble, a Swiss boys' choir, and other groups attracted about 2,000 office workers and office ladies on their way home from work. The venue was the station's Marunouchi North Exit Hall. The stage was set up directly under the 28-meter-high dome. The conductor Ikuma Dan, who had wondered if he could somehow perform music here, was so enthusiastic that he accepted the position of music director.
