April 7. 1945, Japan - Japanese battleship Yamato explodes at the sea in the naval battle of of Bounomisaki , also called Operation Ten-Go or Operation The Japanese force was attacked, stopped, and almost completely destroyed by United States carrier-borne aircraft before reaching Okinawa.
