Supermoon behind trees, illustration
Illustration of a supermoon. A Supermoon occurs when the Moon is both fully illuminated and near its closest point (perigee) in its orbit around the Earth. Astronomers simply call this a perigee full moon. In November 2016, a Supermoon had an apparent diameter of 34 arcminutes, some 14 percent larger than a full moon at apogee, when it is farthest away in its orbit around the Earth.
