Bottom quark event in TASSO detector
Computer display of the decay of a bottom quark in the TASSO detector at the DESY particle physics lab, Hamburg. The small circle at centre represents the beam pipe in which an electron & a positron, accelerated in DESY's PETRA collider, have met & annihilated at the centre. Their energy rematerialises as a number of particles, including a bottom quark which immediately combines with an antiquark to form a B meson. The meson lives much too briefly to be visible, but careful analysis shows its presence. One of the clues is track 3, a muon which penetrates the outer layers of the detector to reach the muon detector (not shown).
