Simulated Higgs boson event
Computer simulation of a Higgs boson event in the L3 detector at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. L3 is one of 4 giant particle detectors at the LEP electron-positron collider. The Higgs boson is a particle postulated by physicist Peter Higgs & is a cornerstone of the \electroweak\" theory uniting the electromagnetic & weak forces. Its discovery is one of the hopes of LEP physicists. The display represents an event in which an electron-positron annihilation produces a Higgs particle & a Z particle, both of which decay into other particles whose paths are represented by the coloured tracks. The boxes represent the energy deposited in L3's hadron calorimeter."
