Earth star mushroom
Earth star mushroom (Geastrum sp.) growing in woodland soil. This mushroom is a fruiting body of this rare fungus that feeds on decaying vegetable matter. An earth star is a puffball mushroom. The outer wall has split open, forming the star shape that it is named for, to disperse the reproductive spores from the sac inside. The spores are puffed through the hole that is seen at centre.
