Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria)
Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) mushroom lying among ling heather (Calluna vulgaris). This fungus is poisonous if ingested, however it is often used for its hallucinogenic properties when used in small doses. It contains the psychoactive alkaloid muscimol. It is found in autumn in birch, pine, spruce and fir woodlands. Photographed in November at Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK.
