Late spider orchid flowers
Late spider orchid flowers (Ophrys holoserica, also known as O. fuciflora). The orchid is named for the coloured and shaped parts that resemble a spider. This part of each flower is a specialised petal, called a lip, that attracts pollinators. This orchid is found in Europe, Turkey and North Africa. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers. Photographed in Germany.
