Sheep's hoof. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through the hoof of a sheep. In sheep and other hooved animals, the hoof is made of the same material as nails and claws, the protein keratin, which is laid down in horny layers. Here, the polarised light has revealed the layers of keratin. Hooves are found in animals that have adapted to walk on the tip of a single digit. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
