Charles Darwin's signature at the end of a letter addressed to John Murray, who published the first edition of his book On the Origin of Species in 1859. Darwin (1809-1882), a British naturalist, was known for his prolific letter-writing as well as for his seminal work in scientific literature. On the Origin of Species is considered by many scientists to be the fundamental beginnings of evolutionary biology. It introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of time through the process of natural selection.
