Pearson's Jupiter clock
Pearson's Jupiter clock, front view. This clock was designed by the British astronomer the Reverend William Pearson (1767-1847). It is called the 'Jupiter clock' because of the model of Jupiter on its rear (see C001/2075). The front of the clock has a combined minute/hour dial (bottom) and three subsidiary dials for days of the week and month and moon periods. Pearson was one of the founding members of the Astronomical Society of London, which became the Royal Astronomical Society in 1831. He received the Society's Gold Medal in 1829. Pearson was renowned as a designer and builder of clocks, orrery's and other such devices to track the movement of the planets in the skies. His first designs are from 1796, and this one dates from just before 1800.
