Enkephalin crystals, light micrograph
Enkephalin crystals, polarised light micrograph. Enkephalin is an endorphin found in the human brain. There are two variants: Met-enkephalin (seen here), which contains the amino acid methionine, and Leu-enkephalin, which contains the amino acid leucine. Enkephalin is an opioid neurotransmitter (nerve signalling chemical) that has analgesic (painkilling) effects resembling those of the drugs morphine and codeine.
