Artificial bone research
Artificial bone research. Artificial bone and well plate containing cell culture medium. This artificial bone was created using the same technology as used in the manufacture of car catalytic converters. The highly porous ceramic-based bone acts as a scaffold that can be moulded into any shape. The porosity of the scaffold also allows cultured bone cells (osteoblasts) and blood vessels to grow while the the orginal scaffold is eventually resorbed into the body. This artificial bone may one day replace titanium and steel as a suitable material for bone replacement surgery. Photographed in 2009 at Warwick University.
