Historical mining complex, Belgium
Historical mining complex. School children on a trip to Grand-Hornu. Founded in 1810 by the French industrialist Henri De Gorge, this is a unique example of functional town planning at the beginning of the great age of industrialisation. It consists of the industrial mining complex, workers' housing estate and the directors' luxury residential development. Built in the neo-classical style it has been restored as part of a Belgian initiative to preserve their industrial heritage. It is now owned by the Province of Hainaut and houses the Museum of Contemporary Arts of the French Community (MAC's). Photographed in Hornu, Belgium.
