Pilonidal sinus, light micrograph
Pilonidal sinus. Light micrograph of tissue from an abscess in a case of a pilonidal sinus. This is a type of chronic abscess that forms beneath the outer layers of the skin and fails to heal properly. The healing and repair process is impeded by hair shafts and follicles. The epithelium (across top) eventually folds down into the abscess, in a track known as a sinus.
