Swine flu sample, June 2009
Swine flu sample. Medical worker sealing a specimen transport bag for a sample of mucus from a patient thought to be infected with the H1N1 (swine flu) influenza virus. The specimen will be used for a culture sample and rapid testing. Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza viruses. This H1N1 strain is able to spread from human to human, and was declared a pandemic on 11 June 2009. Symptoms are similar to those of regular human flu.
