Horsetail cone, polarised light micrograph. Transverse section through a mature cone (strobilus) of the common horsetail (Equisetum arvense). The central axis (round, lower left) is surrounded by numerous sporophylls which consist of a stalk bearing numerous sack-like hanging sporangia containing spores (yellow). The spores are surrounded by elater-like coils (thought to help the release of spores). Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
