Sweet potato stem, light micrograph
Sweet potato stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) stem. At the centre of the stem is a large area of pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. Surrounding this are xylem (red) and then phloem (blue) cells, which transport water and carbohydrates around the plant respectively. Outside of this is a very thin ring of parenchyma cells (dark pink) and then collenchyma tissue (blue and black), before the outer layers of epidermis and cuticle. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
