Sweet potato stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) plant. Sweet potato plants have vine-like trailing stems. The outer epidermis can be seen enclosing several layers of angular-collenchyma (blue-black), the cortex of parenchyma cells (pink), phloem fibres (deep red), an outer ring of phloem sieve tube cells (blue), the cambium (deep blue), and a thin ring of xylem vessels (red). Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
