Cannabinoid receptor binding, artwork
Cannabinoid receptor binding. Molecular model of an anandamide molecule (mostly white, centre right) binding to a cannabinoid type 1 (CB1, green) receptor. CB1 is a G protein-coupled cell membrane receptor that is found mainly in the brain. Anandamide is a cannabinoid produced by body. The binding of anandamide to the receptor induces cellular responses inside the cell. Anandamide plays a role in memory, regulating feeding behaviour and motivation. CB1 receptors also bind THC, the active compound in the psychoactive drug cannabis.
