Particle therapy treatment
Particle therapy treatment. Patient being prepped for particle therapy. Particle, or heavy ion, therapy is a form of radiotherapy that uses beams of high energy protons, neutrons, or positive ions to target cancerous tumours. The particles damage the DNA of the cancer cells, ultimately causing their death. The helmet is designed to immobilise and protect the patient's head during treatment. Photographed at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, Darmstadt, Germany.
