Extremophile genome map
Extremophile genome map, computer artwork. Genome map of the extreme heat-loving organism Methanopyrus kandleri. The image was created by rendering all the DNA strands that make up the organism's genome into a planet-like sphere. Dark patches represent genes that help it to survive high temperatures. Yellow peaks represent archaea-specific genes and red peaks represent genes for methane production. Methanopyrus kandleri belongs to a the archaea group of bacteria-like organisms. It is found around underwater around hot 'black smoker' hydrothermal vents. This map is one of a series of 'genomic planets' created by German biologist Thomas Fester.
