Ovarian cyst. Light micrograph of a section through a luteal cyst in an ovary. Luteal cysts such as this are thought to be derived from a corpus luteum that has not undergone atrophy (wasting away) to form a corpus albicans. These cysts are usually oval in shape with a a slightly irregular outline. Here the characteristic layer of luteal cells (middle band) can be seen.
