Muybridge motion study track, 1870s
Muybridge motion study track. This is the track at Paulo Alto, California, USA, used by the English photographer Eadweard J. Muybridge (1830-1904) in his pioneering work of 1878 and 1879, documenting the motion of animals. His most famous study was of a galloping horse. This is a general view of the experiment track, with the cameras set up in the hut in the background at centre right. For a close-up of the track and cameras, see image C007/1492. This photograph is from Muybridge's book The Attitudes of Animals in Motion (1881).
