The Takenoko Tribe
(June, 1980)
Takenoko-zoku (around June 1980): Takenoko-zoku was the driving force that made the name "Harajuku" known even overseas. Tokyo is the leader in youth fashion in Japan. Harajuku is the most cutting-edge area in Tokyo. Young people gather here from everywhere, and one after another, new clothes and customs are born. Harajuku's transformation into a town for young people began around 1970, when the opening of the Chiyoda subway line spurred the construction of boutiques one after another and the "Takenoko-zoku" were born. The "Takenoko-zoku" were born, and their intensely colored and eccentrically designed clothes and dances have now made the city famous overseas.
