Myosin structure. Computer artwork showing the structure of myosin II, a molecular motor responsible for muscle contraction. Myosin is composed of two heavy chains and four light chains. The heavy chains make up the heads (red) and tail (yellow and grey). The light chains, two per head, bind at the neck (where the two heavy chains unwrap to form the heads). The functioning of myosin is dependent on the hydrolysis of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to provide energy that is converted into mechanical movement. This hydrolysis is carried out by ATPase enxymes (round, yellow).
