Darwin's Journal of Researches
Darwin's Journal of Researches. Title of page of 'Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History of the various countries visited by H.M.S. Beagle' (1839). This work, by the British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882), was originally published in May 1839 as volume three ('Journal and Remarks') of a four-volume work by Captain Robert FitzRoy, the commander of the expedition. Darwin's account was so popular, though, that it was reissued on its own in August of that year, under this new title, by the publisher Henry Colburn of London. It was this voyage that prompted Darwin's work on his theory of evolution.
