Chloride deposits, Mars, satellite image
Chloride deposits. Satellite image showing part of a possible landing site being considered for future Mars missions. It appears to be a shallow depression, with the relatively bright material broken up into patterns possibly consisting of chloride deposits. Deposits like these on Earth imply the past presence of water and a habitable environment. Imaged by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
