Dante Alighieri's death mask

Death mask' of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), Italian poet and author of the 'Divine Comedy', the greatest literary work in the Italian language. In fact, it is not a death mask but a facial reconstruction made from his skull in 2007 in a collaborative project by artists from Pisa University and engineers at the University of Bologna. The reconstruction was based on morphological and metric data collected during the formal identification of his remains in 1921 by the anthropologist Fabio Frassetto, who was also able to make a plaster model. Starting from this model and a morphologically compatible reference mandible, since the original jawbone was missing, a 3D digital model of the complete skull was obtained by reverse engineering and virtual modelling techniques. Dante's face was recreated using the model and facial reconstruction techniques used in forensic anthropology.
