Grey mould fungus, light micrograph
Grey mould fungus. Light micrograph of a section through onion tissue infected with grey mould fungus (Botrytis allii). Botrytis is a parasitic saprophyte mould that grows on wounded plants, seedlings and fruit under damp conditions. Conidiophores develop from the mould's hyphae (pink) and produce conidia (spores, dark pink). Air currents then distribute the conidia. Magnification: x37 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
