Mars Express rocket, cutaway artwork. The first Mars mission carried out by the European Space Agency's (ESA), Mars Express was launched on 2 June 2003 and arrived at Mars in December 2003. Since then, its sensors have extensively mapped Mars, transmitting images and data back to Earth. The launch was with a Soyuz-FG rocket main stage and a Fregat booster (yellow, inside fairing). The Fregat booster was used to launch Mars Express on its interplanetary trajectory. The Soyuz-FG/Fregat launch system was provided by Starsem. The logos of other contributors are also shown on the rocket and its engines.
