Dogfish head, light micrograph
Dogfish head. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the head of a young lesser spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus canicula), in the region of the eyes (upper left and upper right). The dogfish eye has a cornea (black) but no conjunctiva. The lens of the eye is spherical and hard and is suspended by a gelatinous zonule. The dogfish's eye is adapted for near vision in dim light. Between the eyes is the fore-brain region of the brain and part of a ventricle. The brain is surrounded by cartilage (pink). Lower down is the mouth (buccal) cavity and cartilaginous jaws. Magnification: x5 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
