Rear leg of a young Nile crocodile
Rear leg of young Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). This carnivorous predator inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers. The young, become independent at the age of two years. A crocodile's legs have claws, and its back feet are webbed, but the front feet are not webbed. The skin seen here is the underside. Like the upper surfaces, it consists of scaly plates called scutes and osteoderms, but is paler and softer than the armoured upper surfaces. Photographed in 2011, at the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France.
