Theodore Roosevelt addressing a meeting in New York State, 1901. Roosevelt (1858-1919), American Republican politician, was elected Governor of New York in 1898. As Vice-President, after the assassination of William McKinley in 1901 he became the 26th president and, four years later, he won a second term in his own right. In 1906 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation at the end of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). From 'The Sphere'.
