One-yuan banknote, China. The Chinese currency is the renminbi (CNY), with the primary unit being the yuan. Banknote denominations are 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 yuan. The renminbi was introduced in the 1940s around the same time as the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC). This note is from the fifth series of banknotes, printed in 1999, with a second edition in 2005. This is the observe side of the one-yuan banknote, featuring a portrait of PRC founder and leader Mao Zedong (1893-1976), with an orchid flower (left). The symbol at top left includes the five stars of the Chinese flag.
