Nauru (formerly Pleasant Island) lies in the collection of islands in the western Pacific Ocean (blue) known as Micronesia. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania, comprising thousands of small islands and is distinct from Melanesia to the south, and Polynesia to the east. The Philippines lie to the west, and Indonesia to the southwest. Image compiled from data acquired by the LANDSAT 5 and 7 satellites, in 2000.
