Thumb muscles. Computer artwork of two of the muscles (red) of the thumb and their attachment to the bones of the hand. These are two of the three thenar muscles, and are the flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis muscle, with the latter seen above the former. Both originate from bones of the wrist, and attach to the first (proximal) phalanx of the thumb. These two muscles flex (bend) and abduct (move outwards) the thumb respectively. Also shown are the multiple ligaments (white) that hold together the bones of the wrist. The transverse ligaments connecting the distal ends of the metacarpals are also shown.
